In February 2009, Nikon and Essilor International S.A. entered into a global strategic alliance in research and formed a 50/50 joint venture called Nikon and Essilor International Joint Research Center Co. Ltd. This joint venture, expected to begin operation in March 2009, would conduct research and development activities principally associated with materials, optics, and ophthalmic areas.
