Amazon acquires image recognition technology company

To beef-up its mobile capabilities

Amazon.com has acquired California-based start-up SnapTell to strengthen its mobile capabilities. Amazon has bought the visual product search technology company through its search-engine subsidiary A9.com for an undisclosed amount.

SnapTell offers image recognition technology for Apple's iPhone. The technology reportedly enables users to take a photo of a product and connect to an online store to search and buy it.

In a blog post, SnapTell said that one of the most heard requests was how we could integrate better with Amazon's fabulous shopping experience. We should be able to do so pretty well now.

A9 provides search engine and developing technology such as OpenSearch, a set of formats for the sharing of search results. It also delivers advertisements directly on the Amazon.com

Earlier in April, Amazon.com has acquired LexCycle, the maker of Stanza application for the desktop, iPhone and iPod touch.

Amazon intends to run SnapTell as a standalone business unit within its search-engine subsidiary.
