Cisco, EMC to form technology services joint venture: report

CBR Staff Writer Published 02 September 2009

New venture code-named Alpine would be aimed at data centres

Cisco Systems and EMC are in talks to form a new joint venture to provide technology services, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Citing people briefed on the plan, the Journal reported that joint venture would target large businesses and emphasise installing products from Cisco and EMC. Cisco, a provider of networking gear, and EMC, a maker of technology storage, would have board representation on the new company, the people told the Journal.

The Journal reported that the new venture code-named Alpine, would be aimed at data centres and would specialise in installing systems that combine Cisco’s new server and the EMC storage systems. It is unclear when the new venture would be announced.

A spokesman for EMC told the Journal: EMC and Cisco have a long-standing strategic alliance and over the years we continue to broaden and strengthen the alliance.

Earlier this year, EMC and Cisco have entered into a partnership. Cisco launched unified computing systems which combines computational, storage access and network resources into a cohesive system optimised for virtualisation. Cisco’s unified computing system with EMC's portfolio of information infrastructure technologies would allow customers to simplify data centre complexities.
