Extends the End of Life period by one year.

Google will support Chrome OS on Chromebooks for five years, an extension of one year from the previous End of Life (EoL) period.

The support was being provided for four years until last week when Google made the announcement of extension.

EoL means that Google will no longer automatic software updates to the product model. Microsoft provides such support for 10 years.

In a document released last week, Google said, "Chrome devices receive automatic updates regularly that improve and enhance the device and software on the device.

"However, advances in hardware and technology eventually make devices out-of-date, and as time goes by, we can no longer provide updates to leverage new OS features."

The earliest to lose support will be Cr-48, manufactured by Google itself. Support for the product will end in December 2015.

Updates for the premium Chromebook Pixel will end in April 2018. Support for Dell's Chromebook 11 and Asus' Chromebox will continue till January and March 2019 respectively.

The latest updates for Chrome OS also came in the recent weeks. The company released Chrome OS version 35. The prominent among the upgrades is the introduction of "OK Google" hotword for search using Google Now.

The other upgrades include Chrome Launcher for users to arrange their apps.
