More than half of Apple’s app store revenue was generated from US, Japan and China in Q2
Google Play app store recorded 60% more downloads compared to Apple’s App Store during Q2 of 2014, but in terms of revenue it lagged behind Apple’s app market place, according to a study by App Annie.
The app analytics provider also revealed that iOS Apps Store managed to generate 80% more revenue compared to Google Play, but that is 85% lower compared to previous quarter.
The quarterly report prepared by App Annie is based on data from 150 countries.
According to the report, emerging markets like India, Brazil, Taiwan, Indonesia and Vietnam contributed to the revenue growth.
India ranked number three in Google play downloads during the second quarter of 2014, due to consumer’s migration from feature phones to smartphones.
China and Japan helped boost Google Play revenue, while Taiwan, Kuwait and Turkey contributed significantly to iOS App Store revenue.
iOS App Store recorded a 30% quarter- over- quarter revenue growth in countries like Kuwait, Turkey and Taiwan.
Brazil’s market share in Google play’s sports category download doubled from Q1, as it hosted the FIFA World Cup 2014.
Growth in app downloads in sports category was also seen in countries like the US, Germany, and Argentina which recorded 20% growth each.
App Annie CEO Bertrand Schmitt said, "One of the most striking trends from this quarter’s Index is the skyrocketing growth across Asia on both Google Play and iOS."
"Japan and China continue to thrive, but the growth in India – where only 10 percent of today’s population is smartphone-enabled – is hugely significant for publishers as they look for new markets to explore."
