Amid declining margins, eBay sets sights on ‘bigger businesses’.
Go, a product aimed at small-business owners from eBay’s e-commerce software business Magento, is being phased out with its customers to be moved to the competitor Bigcommerce’s service, say sources familiar with the matter.
eBay has apparently penned a deal with Bigcommerce, the terms of which were undisclosed. It was also not clear as to how many customers are being transitioned over to Bigcommerce, reports Re/code.
Magento, which offers three software products to power e-commerce sites, was acquired by eBay three years ago.
While two of them targeted mid-size and large brands and retailers, Go was aimed at small businesses, competing with the likes of Bigcommerce and Shopify.
The company’s move was triggered by the fact that Go never really took off against other services. Also, earlier in March, Magento reduced headcount as part of its "shake-up" of the business to focus more on its other two products aimed at bigger businesses.
In line with this so-called "re-alignment," eBay is also closing ProStores, which is an older service that hosted e-commerce shops for sole proprietors and other types of small businesses, said a source to Re/code.
Both eBay and Bigcommerce declined to comment on the matter.
