The new OS is customised for all screen sizes.
Microsoft will combine all major versions of Windows into a single Windows platform.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said: "We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes."
Previously the company hinted at such a platform in its developer's conference when it announced the Universal Windows Apps.
Nadella did not elaborate on how Windows phone, Windows and Xbox will be unified, but using the platform developers will be able to create applications that would work across all devices - something that would be beneficial to the users as well.
This is a big shift from the company's previous approach, where multiple teams worked on different versions of Windows. The new approach by the tech giant is also different from the Apple's multiple platform approach consisting of iOS and Mac OS.
However, the company will stop production of different versions of its OS as it will produce Windows Enterprise edition, Windows Pro edition and Bing for low cost devices but the platforms would be similar to each other.
