Freenet project struggles with overload

CBR Staff Writer Published 01 August 2004

Four years after its inception, the Freenet project is preparing to release version 0.6 of its anonymous peer-to-peer file-sharing software, but is facing challenges with stability and reliability.

Speaking at the DefCon security conference in Las Vegas Friday, Freenet founder Ian Clarke told attendees that the network has recovered from a catastrophic failure June 2003, but that testing is ongoing.

Freenet promises a way for people share information on the internet more or less anonymously using strong encryption and indirect routing. It gained notoriety in Napster's day when it was perceived as a way to anonymously pirate music.
