Vulkan graphics API to power mobile devices.
Imagination Technologies is planning to demonstrate an advanced prototype of the new Vulkan graphics API on an Android powered Nexus Player featuring PowerVR GPU.
The Gnome Horde demo will be previewed at SIGGRAPH in partnership with Google, and will showcase the capability of Vulkan, a high-performance graphics and compute API that will fulfill the needs of the Android graphics developer community.
Vulkan will mark the entry of Khronos, which is an open standards consortium into the low-level graphics API field.
The proposed API is expected to be lightweight and is likely to have a close-to-the-metal interface that will facilitate the applications to exploit multicore and multi-threaded CPUs.
With the new API, programmers will be able to explore tile based renderers, which is the dominant architecture in the mobile industry.
Vulkan is also expected to provide new levels of performance and efficiency for high-end graphics and also coexist with OpenGL ES APIs.
Imagination director of multimedia technology marketing Says Peter McGuinness said: "Imagination is a major contributor to the Vulkan specification. We’ve been working closely with Google to integrate their input to the spec, using our PowerVR based platform.
"We are very enthusiastic that Google is embracing Vulkan on its Android products."
