Since Mozilla Corp released its new Firefox 1.5 late on November 29, 2005, there have been more than 2 million downloads, the company said.
"Demand continues to be high, greatly exceeding what we saw last year with the release of Firefox 1.0, said Chris Beard, Mozilla VP of products, on his blog.
Firefox 1.5, which has been in the hands of almost 1 million beta users since August, can now be downloaded free in versions for Linux, Mac OSX and Windows.
New features include drag-and-drop tabs, an automatic update system and new support for Web standards. Mountain View, California-based Mozilla also said the latest version boasts performance improvements, including faster page viewing.
Additionally, Firefox 1.5 has a new tool called "Clear Private Data," which enables a user's browser history, cookies and saved passwords to be easily removed.
