Unit sales pick up but still down on 08
Gartner is to raise its forecasts for PC sales for 2009 through 2011, saying the worst may be over for the PC industry with shipments expected to slip in 2009 by just 2% rather than by the 6% it predicted earlier in the year.
Sale are on pace to reach 285 million units in 2009, the company said today, which is down 2% on 2008 numbers but not as steep a fall as was forecast in June.
“Mobile PC shipments have regained substantial momentum, especially in emerging markets,” the market-watcher said.
For PC shipments to post growth for the year, shipments would have to grow at least 4% in the second half of 2009 compared with the second half of 2008. Gartner analysts said that scenario seems just a bit beyond the market's capability.
The release of Windows 7 next month is not expected to significantly influence PC demand.
