RIM launches new 3G smartphone

Features BlackBerry OS 5.0 that offers users email management and calendar enhancements

Research In Motion (RIM) has launched BlackBerry Bold 9700, a new 3G smartphone with a 2.44” light-sensing display that offers 480 x 360 resolution at 245 ppi. It features a qwerty keyboard and a touch-sensitive trackpad that allows responsive navigation.

The new phone also offers functionality and features with support for 3G HSDPA networks around the world, a next-generation (624 MHz) processor, 256MB flash memory, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, and a 3.2MP camera with variable zoom, autofocus, flash and video recording.

The company said that the new phone features BlackBerry OS 5.0 that offers users email management and calendar enhancements and a better browsing experience with faster JavaScript and CSS processing. It also provides support for BlackBerry Internet Service and BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Bold 9700 offers access to BlackBerry App World, featuring a catalog of mobile applications developed specifically for BlackBerry smartphones. It comes with a removable, rechargeable 1500 mAhr battery that provides approximately six hours of talk time and 17 days of standby time in 3G mode.

Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO of RIM, said: The BlackBerry Bold 9700 builds on the success of the original BlackBerry Bold with new, state-of-the-art features and a smaller, lighter and highly optimised design that looks, feels and performs great.
