RIM to offer new smartphone software for Mac users

New software to run on Mac OS X versions 10.5.5 and above

Research In Motion (RIM) has revealed plans to release BlackBerry Desktop Software for Apple computers in September, according to a posting on the company's blog.

This new release will allow smartphone users to synchronise their playlists, iTunes, contacts, calendars, notes, and tasks from their Mac. The smartphone desktop software will also allow users to update their devices with new software, manage applications, manage multiple devices and perform scheduled backups automatically.

However, the new software would run on only Mac OS X versions 10.5.5 and up, which means that Mac users with older versions of OS will be unable to run the software.

RIM's BlackBerry software can be run only on Windows, as compared to iPhone software, which can be installed in both Macs and Windows PCs. Third-party software are required to enable communication between BlackBerry and Mac. Some of the third party softwares include The Missing Sync from Mark/Space and PocketMac, which is provided for free by RIM to BlackBerry owners using Mac.

Earlier in December, RIM had released a preview of BlackBerry Media Sync for Mac that allowed few of the smartphone devices to sync music with iTunes and Mac.
