German victory attracts 32.1m tweets and 280m Facebook interactions during broadcast.

The final of the 2014 World Cup broke all existing record to become the most popular sporting event in both Facebook and Twitter history, the social media sites have revealed.

Last night's match between Germany and Argentina spawned a total of 32.1m tweets over the course of its broadcast, with an incredible 618,725 tweets per minute being recorded as the final whistle sounded.

This took it past the previous record of 580,166 tweets per minute, which followed Germany's fifth goal against Brazil in the semi-finals.

This was closely followed by 556,499 tweets per minute as Mario Götze scored what would prove to be the winning goal in the 112th minute.

The slightly-awkward moment when losing Argentinean forward Lionel Messi was awarded the Golden Ball trophy for the tournament's best (alongside the far happier German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, picking up the Golden Gloves award for best goalkeeper in the tournament) was the third-highest peak, causing 395,773 tweets per minute.

Matchwinner Götze was the most-mentioned player for the victorious German team, followed by team-mates Manuel Neuer and concussion victim Christoph Kramer. For the losing Argentinean squad, talisman Lionel Messi took top spot, with Gonzalo Higuaín and Javier Mascherano rounding out the top three.

Facebook said that 88 million people left more than 280 million posts, comments, and likes about the game, surpassing the previous engagement record for a single sporting event, which was set during February's Superbowl XLVII (245 million interactions).

Surprisingly, the most active country during the game was the US, where 10.5m people were talking about the match, ahead of Brazil (10m) and Argentina (7m), while males aged 18 to 24 were the most engaged. Facebook previously announced that the World Cup as a whole is its most-talked about event ever: the social network reached over a billion interactions just two weeks into the tournament.

This World Cup has proved to be the most influential tournament in social media history, as viewers flocked to Twitter to share their opinions and comments online. The opening second round game of the tournament, which saw hosts Brazil take on Chile, garnered 16.3m tweets, crushing the previous record, held by this year's Super Bowl, which saw 382,000 tweets per minute.
