The new FX chips use new Piledriver multi core architecture

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has updated the FX family of its central processing units (CPUs) with the introduction of eight new chips.

The new FX chips use new Piledriver multi core architecture which will provide about 15% increase in performance compared to the last generation FX products.

The enhanced performance from the latest architecture is designed for multi-threaded applications such as content creation, video and audio encoding, and games, said the company.

Codenamed Vishera, the new eight FX series chips, which have clock speeds of up to 4.2GHz, use the same AM3+ sockets as the current AMD FX processors.

AMD said that the FX-8350, which starts from $195, has eight cores and a base clock of 4.2GHz.

Other new CPUs in the FX family include the FX-8320 with eight cores, 4GHz base frequency and the FX-6300 with six cores, 4.1GHz base frequency, and the FX-4300 with four cores, 4GHz base frequency.

AMD vice president of desktop and component products Leslie Sobon said Gamers and PC enthusiasts who buy AMD FX processors would have a lot to cheer about with the increased speeds.

"After introducing the industry's first and only eight-core desktop processor last year, we now have even faster stock frequencies and an all-new, high-performance x86 core architecture to satisfy power-users," said Sobon.

Earlier this month, AMD had revealed its plans to lay off nearly about 2,340 jobs, 20% to 30% of its total workforce of about 11,700.
