Intel working on tiny chips for wearable devices

The new chips would be five times smaller in size and 10 times more efficient than the chipmaker’s Atom processors.

Intel is planning a new range of low-power micro processors that can be used in wearable devices including smartwatches and bracelets.

Dubbed as Quark, the line-up is said to use less battery power and integrates into small devices.

Intel's CEO Brian Krzanich said the new chips would be five times smaller in size and 10 times more efficient than the chipmaker's Atom processors for tablets and smartphones.

"We're very committed to not missing the next big thing," James said.

Scheduled to be shipped in 2014, the processors will be offered in multiple variants and tailored for user requirements.

Intel is also planning sell chips built on 14nm process by the 2013, while tablets incorporating Intel chip set to be in stores in time for the holiday season.

Tech firms including Microsoft, Google, Samsung, LG, Pebble, Qualcomm and Sony are already in the wearable device race, while Samsung, Pebble and Qualcomm have launched their smartwatches.
