IBM unveils PowerLinux System server for big data and analytics

The new products include PowerLinux 7R4 server, IBM DB2 database software for Linux and IBM Cognos Business Intelligence.

IBM has unveiled PowerLinux server, new software and middleware applications designed for big data, analytics and new Java applications in an open cloud environment.

The products include PowerLinux 7R4 server, IBM DB2 database software for Linux, IBM Cognos Business Intelligence and EnterpriseDB database software.

The new PowerLinux 7R4 server7R4 is part of IBM's Power Systems PowerLinux servers that operate standard Linux from Red Hat and SUSE.

IBM said it performs with about four sockets and 32 cores to handle compute-intensive workloads in analytics, cognitive computing and web infrastructure.

IBM Power Systems general manager Doug Balog said that more clients are choosing the company's Power Systems designed to handle cloud and big data workloads in an open Linux environment.

"Responding to this need, we are aggressively investing in our open ecosystem including new products, applications and collaborations that support today's emerging Linux workloads," Balog added.

The company has also released the IBM DB2 database software for Linux, which is claimed to offer an average compatibility of 98% when migrating Oracle Database applications.

According to the company, the EnterpriseDB's Postgres Plus Advanced Server offers a low cost database that supports ongoing and new business applications.

The IBM Cognos Business Intelligence has also been improved for Linux on Power, offering an analytics engine that leverages the performance of Power for data-driven insight.
