The move aims to assist transforming data centres and ramp up the journey to the cloud.

Microsoft has penned a three year deal with Cisco to integrate their hardware and software to assist enterprises in modernising their data centres, and embrace the cloud through marketing and engineering.

As part of the initiative, Cisco's Unified Computing System (UCS) converged data centre technology and Nexus networking switches will be integrated with Microsoft's Cloud OS offerings, such as Windows Server, SQL Server, Hyper-V and Azure cloud platform.

Cisco Global Data Center and Virtualization Sales senior VP, Frank Palumbo, said that from innovative technologies and global brands to specialised channel partners, Cisco and Microsoft have the ingredients to transform the traditional data centre.

"Now we're expanding our long-standing technical partnership with Microsoft with an aggressive global go-to-market and sales initiative," Palumbo added.

"By providing our customers and partners with greater sales alignment and even deeper technology integration we will help them transform their data centers and accelerate the journey to the cloud."

The deal includes sales, channel and go-to-market efforts around cloud and data centre opportunities, further enabling businesses to trim down costs, implement new applications and services, and be quick in updating their data centres.

Microsoft Worldwide Enterprise & Partners Group VP, Stephen Boyle, said enterprise customers worldwide are betting on Microsoft and Cisco to realise the benefits of combined cloud and datacentre technologies.

"Now, together, we're strengthening our joint efforts to help customers move faster, reduce costs and deliver powerful new applications and services for their businesses," Boyle added.

The initiative will mainly target clients in the UK, US, Canada, Germany, France and Australia during the first year.

Recently, Microsoft also rolled out similar programme with HP called 'HP Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Migration Program'.
