EE looks to Juniper Networks for software defined networking

The mobile network operator migrates to Juniper’s IP/MPLS core network.

EE has upgraded its network infrastructure to Juniper Networks' IP/MPLS core network, in efforts to increase automation and deliver improved services.

The mobile network operator, which is looking to trial voice calls and texts using Wi-Fi and 4G connections, has deployed Juniper's MX Series 3D Universal Edge routers on its service point of presence (PoP) infrastructure.

The routers will act as a service hub and be deployed as a universal software defined networking (SDN) gateway to connect physical and virtual networks.

Peter O'Donnell, EE's head of Transport Network Design and Planning, said: "The MX Series from Juniper has a strong track record with proven investment protection.

"The Universal Edge provides EE with all the capacity and performance head-room that we need in the medium term and has a strong development roadmap, so our investment is sound."

Sean Dolan, SVP, EMEA, at Juniper Networks, added: "People are reliant on mobile devices, applications and services - and they have built up expectations of even faster downloads and high-quality application performance from 4G/LTE-enabled networks."

The implementation comes after Telecom Italia said it upgraded its point of presence (PoP) infrastructure with the same routers after trialling Juniper's SDN controller.
