Riverbed unveils new Steelhead WAN optimisation appliance

Uses solid-state drives and 10GbE ports

Riverbed Technology has unveiled new Steelhead 7050 model wide area network (WAN) optimisation appliance, which combines new levels of bandwidth and TCP session with solid-state drives (SSD) and 10GbE to deliver performance and fault tolerance in large data centres and private cloud environments.

The company claims that the new appliance meets the performance requirements of large enterprises and allows them to manage large-scale data centre-to-data centre replication, accelerate applications among many locations and users in an enterprise and build large private cloud infrastructures.

The new appliance comes equipped with up to 28 SSDs that allow for higher throughput for read, write and search performance. Its data reduction capabilities free up more bandwidth for business-critical applications, often reducing WAN traffic as much as 60-95%, Riverbed said.

According to Riverbed, the benefits of new appliance include, continuous optimisation for business continuity requirements with datastore fault tolerance and support for up to four 10GbE SR cards and equipped to handle up to 100,000 connection.

The Steelhead 7050L optimises up to 75,000 concurrent TCP connections and is equipped with 14 SSDs while the Steelhead 7050M optimises up to 100,000 concurrent TCP connections and is equipped with 28 SSDs.
