Virginia-based company offers backup and recovery across physical, virtual and cloud environments

Dell's new Software Group had made its first acquisition - snapping up backup software firm AppAssure. Financial details of the deal were not revealed. AppAssure has about 230 employees, who will be retained by Dell.

Dell's announcement of the deal suggests that the Virginia-based company offers backup and "near instant and 100% reliable application recovery", whether the infrastructure is physical, virtual or cloud-based. Its technology works across VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer environments.

"AppAssure's unique architecture delivers innovative cloud-enabled backup and replication solutions that meet the challenges of protecting the explosive growth of data in both virtual and physical environments," said Brad Anderson, president, Enterprise Solutions Group, Dell.

"At a practical level, AppAssure enables Dell customers to seamlessly move and replicate data across our existing platforms, from an EqualLogic array in a remote office to a Compellent array at a data recovery site," he added.

Dell's Software Group was set-up in early February 2012 and signalled the Texas-based company's intention to take on IBM and HP as a provider of hardware, software and services across all aspects of IT. Headed by former CA boss John Swainson, Dell's Software Group is aimed at a $3 trillion industry, the company said.

Dell's Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) president and general manager Aongus Hegarty, recently told CBR that the company has had a tough year in Europe, as public sector cuts took hold. The flooding in Thailand that impacted hard drive production was also listed as a factor in the company's unimpressive financial results.
