The micro-blogging site has gained 60 million new users in just 9 months.

In March this year Twitter announced that the site had over 140m monthly active users. Twitter announced today that the number has now risen to over 200M monthly active users.

Twitter shared the news in a tweet, and called its users "the pulse of the planet."

The company has introduced numerous new features this year to help bring more people to its site.

In November, Twitter launched a feature that allows users to email tweets to anyone, including those who do not have an account.

Tweets are able to be emailed from the Twitter stream or by clicking the 'more' icon next to the reply and retweet buttons.

The microblogging service has also launched a photo-filter feature to rival Instagram's.

Twitter released its own photo-filter option after Instagram cut off support to Twitter cards.

"Due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration...photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience said Twitter in a statement."So when users click on Tweets with an Instagram link, photos appear cropped."

The micro blogging site had once tried to buy Instagram before it was acquired by Facebook.

Instagram CEO, Kevin Systrom, addressed the sudden decision to cut support for Twitter cards at Le Web Paris 12'.

"We will always be integrated with Twitter in a way that you can tweet out from Instagram to Twitter," said Systrom.

However, Systrom believes that cutting Twitter support is "the correct thing for our business to do at this time."

Users can now choose from eight different filters to edit and refine photos on Twitter, with effects ranging from black & white to vintage.

The new feature also offers the option to auto-enhance and frame photos.

Photos can be previewed in Discover and search and tweets can also be expanded to view photos on Twitter.

Twitter users can also swipe through images on photo streams in profiles and search results.
