Universal Music seeks month-by-month arrangement with Apple

CBR Staff Writer Published 02 July 2007

The world's largest record company Universal Music Group has decided not to renew a two-year agreement to sell music downloads through Apple's iTunes site.

Music will now be sold on a month-by-month basis, leaving the option open to secure exclusive deals with other services. It is believed that Universal is seeking greater flexibility in the way its sells music online and is keen to explore new avenues.

Apple currently sells more than 70% of all digital music downloads in the US, causing unease among record companies, which are concerned its dominance in the market has restricted sales by keeping customers locked within the Apple system.
