New ‘Buy’ button allows you to make purchases via the social network.

Facebook is trialling a new 'buy' button feature on its website that will enable consumers to buy products promoted on the social network.

The new feature is currently under trial with a 'few small and medium-sized businesses' in the US, marking the social networking firm's latest efforts to play a vital role in the e-commerce business.

Facebook said in a statement: "None of the credit or debit card information people share with Facebook when completing a transaction will be shared with other advertisers, and people can select whether or not they'd like to save payment information for future purchases."

However, Facebook noted that it will not share users' credit and debit card information with other advertisers, while offering more details once it has collected feedback from the trial.

Mobile advertising has turned out to be one of Facebook's fastest-growing revenue categories, with about 80% of its users accessing the site via smartphones and other portable gadgets.

Recently, Twitter also revealed planned to introduce a Buy button as part of efforts to host ecommerce transactions.
