Action promised after The US White House is displayed under racist search term.
Google apologised for search results which displayed the US White House in Google Maps under the search term ‘n***** house’.
Search term ‘n***** king’ in a global view on Google maps also focused on the Washington DC greater area and showed the White House as primary search result or was one of the top three results in the search.
A Google spokesperson said: "Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologise for any offence this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly."
Users can submit edits to Google Maps through Map Maker, which is being cited as a possible source of the issue. The company has not confirmed the cause of the problem.
Google has temporarily suspended the privilege of Map Maker and is reportedly making the system more robust.
The Washington Post reported that the search giant has pledged to give an update by 27th May. Until then, users will be able to report mistakes and inappropriate material from the app.
