The company said it has no reason to believe that any customers were affected.
A security flaw in Verizon’s customer service support system may have exposed the personal data of nine million broadband customers.
The data could have been used to reset passwords and allow hackers to spoof IP addresses to access credit card and bank information, health records and social security numbers.
Verizon is reported to have fixed the flaw after being notified of it by the news agency Buzzfeed, who initially reported the flaw following a tip off by a reader. The vulnerability was verified several times, on various accounts, with the repeated permission of the account holders.
Verizon spokesperson Alberto Canal the company has no reason to believe that any customers were affected by this. "If we discover that any were, we will contact them directly."
Earlier this week, Verizon agreed to acquire AOL in a deal worth about $4.4bn. The move will support the company’s LTE wireless video and OTT strategy, as well as its IoT platforms.
