Ericsson and Telstra have made a breakthrough by encrypting data while travelling on a Ciena 100 Gigabit connection between Australia and the United States.
Optical encryption is the technology at the core of this process, with consistency and speed pointed to as stand out attributes.
This achievement could prove extremely important across the industries, with robust security now an essential component in all business processes. Most crucially, this option intended to provide an efficient solution while ensuring reliable protection.
Darrin Webb, Telstra executive director of international operations and services, said: “This demonstration shows that customer services with large bandwidth requirements can be secured and data transported across virtually any distance and over an underlying network that uses multiple vendors.”
Ericsson and Telstra’s achievement spanned the vast 21,940km stretch across the Atlantic between Melbourne, Australia, and Los Angeles.
“This means we can provide service consistency regardless of the cable system used. Customers will also be able to protect their data not only at the application layer but also at the network layer without any reduction in quality…Enhancing our network leadership in the Asia Pacific region is a priority for us and this innovation continues our commitment to providing customers with a world-class network experience,” Webb said.
Another stride forwards in encryption came in recent months from IBM, when broadcasting the capabilities of its Z mainframe. IBM has said that the new mainframe will be the key to applying encryption at every level of the network, including cloud services, databases and applications.
IBM said that the mainframe is able to handle and run 12 billion encrypted transactions daily, and it is intended to be a solution to the global data breach crisis that continues to grip the world.
