IDC has released a Big Data and analytics (BDA) maturity model in order to assist vendors unlock the value of Big Data.
Many organisations lack the competence or maturity needed to capitalise on Big Data assets, according to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC).
The research firm found organisations also lack competence to deploy analytics pervasively to optimise operational, tactical, and strategic decisions.
In order to assist vendors unlock the value of Big Data, IDC has released a Big Data and analytics (BDA) maturity model.
IDC said that the maturity model provides a structure of stages, critical measures, outcomes, and actions required for organisations to advance along the successive stages of BDA competency and maturity toward data-driven decision making for the $100bn technology and services market.
The model allows organiations to assess their BDA competency and maturity, use the baseline to define short- and long-term goals and plan for improvement.
By using the model, organisations can also prioritise BDA technology, staffing, and other related investment decisions, uncover maturity gaps among business units and between business and IT groups.
IDC program vice president of business analytics research Dan Vesset said BDA have become the top agenda items for many executives, but with the opportunity to unlock the value of Big Data to accelerate innovation, drive optimisation, and improve compliance comes the need to demonstrate value, navigate expanding technology alternatives, re-create business processes, and ensure the availability of appropriately skilled staff.
"The ability to manage and analyze Big Data and derive value from these activities will increasingly define an organization’s ability to compete or service its constituents," Vesset said.
