Traffic for LTE diameter signaling is expected to increase 140% (CAGR) to about 99 million messages per second (MPS) by 2017, according to a report from Oracle.
The report said worldwide traffic is expected to grow more than twice as fast as mobile data traffic.
According to the Oracle Communications LTE Diameter Signaling Index, the LTE Diameter signalling traffic reported transfer of 1.2 million MPS in 2012.
The study put the increase in diameter signalling messages down to growth in 4G/LTE networks built to address the demand of smartphones and tablets.
Network policy is expected to be the major contributor to signalling volume, while policy MPS is expected to increase three times during 2013 and 2014 compared to last year.
Oracle Communications VP and general manager Bhaskar Gorti said digital lifestyle services represent new ways for operators to engage and retain subscribers and expand partnerships..
"Behind the scenes, the signalling that underpins these services will also naturally increase, as consumers benefit from the speed, efficiency and creativity of new LTE services," Gorti said.
The report also said it expects North America to be the largest contributor to Diameter signalling traffic during the forecast period,reaching about 43 million MPS in 2017.
Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Latin America regions are anticipated to grow over 200% per year through to 2017, while Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and South Korea will hold the majority of LTE Diameter signaling growth in Asia-Pacific region.
