The new products from 3Com Corp, Santa Clara that are seen as providing the first reason for anyone to consider seriously buying OS/2 (CI No 1,033) are 3+Open LAN View and 3+Open LAN Secure, distributed applications that take advantage of 3+Open LAN Manager interprocess communication, or Named Pipes. Named Pipes is the new industry-standard interface for application to-application communications according to 3Com, which means that it was stolen from Unix and Microsoft Corp and 3Com hope that it will be regarded as a standard. 3+Open LAN View is an OS/2 Presentation Manager application providing a graphical view of server statistics relating to performance, usage and security, in addition to network errors. The statistics can be viewed as they occur or from a file. 3+Open LAN View also converts the statistics into a Data Interchange Format readable by database and analytical applications such as Lotus 1-2-3, Ashton-Tate’s dBase III or Microsoft Excel. LAN View includes a click-and-zoom capability so that the network administrator can select and expand on-screen windows. The windows display a detailed audit trail of network information, including time of errors, that can help isolate trends before, 3Com hopes, they lead to network problems. 3+Open LAN Secure is designed to provide an extra measure of security through enhanced password and resource management. The application enables the network administrator to design a customised password-control program that automatically forces users to change their password. It also tracks and logs network resource access and use, enabling the administrator to monitor security-related events such as invalid log-on attempts and printer use. 3+Open LAN View and 3+Open LAN Secure will be available in the first quarter of 1989 at $500 and $1,000 per network respectively.
