3Com Corp says it will cut around 800 jobs as a result of its recently closed merger with modem and remote access specialist US Robotics Corp. Eric Benhamou, 3Com chairman and CEO, told 3Com employees of the severance plans via a video-teleconference that took place on July 1. Although Benhamou was unable top give an exact number a precise figure is expected to be announced soon as the company is to take charges associated with the layoffs in a special merger provision to be recorded in August. Of the 800 layoffs, 600 are expected to be permanent positions and 200 are temporary. The permanent positions to be cut total about 4% of the combined 3Com’s 13,500 employees. We are still working to redeploy jobs, so the 800 layoffs over the next year are an estimate,” according to a 3Com spokesperson. Adding that the majority of job cuts will be in the corporate headquarters of 3Com and what was USR. “There are different task teams analyzing how to incorporate the two companies,” said Powers. A formal announcement on the job cuts will be made either late this month or in early August.
