3Dfx Interactive Inc has confirmed that its new graphics chip, code-named ‘Napalm’ won’t be available for the crucial fourth- quarter holiday period. The company’s CEO, Glen Ballard, speaking at the Cowan conference in Boston, warned that the delay means that investors can expect further losses in the third and fourth quarter of this year. The delay seems to be a further confirmation that 3Dfx is losing its grip on the rough and tumble 3D market, where a six-month product cycle is the norm. Major competitors Nvidia Corp and S3 Inc both have new offerings ready for the Christmas period. Ballard said that he expects the chip to ship in the first quarter of next year and 3Dfx to return to profitability by the second quarter. á
