List: The big devices coming out from Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and HTC.
2015 was a big year for smartphones, with the launch of the Samsung S6 a particular highlight. CBR rounds up some of the main device launches that will take place next year.
1. iPhone 7
Apple is now following a fairly consistent pattern with its device launches. September of each even year sees the next generation device launched, while the odd years see an enhanced version of this device launched.
Since 2015 saw the launch of the iPhone 6S, the iPhone 7 is presumably on the way. There are rumours circulating that the device will have no headphone jack. Other features might include water-resistance, a feature which Apple recently filed a patent for, and extended battery life.
2. Samsung S7
Leaks and rumours are also surfacing about the big Android launch of next year, the Samsung S7. Like the S6, launched in April 2015, the device is expected to come in different models. For the first time this could include a larger ‘phablet’-sized version.
It is rumoured that the device will be on sale as early as January or February. Some counterpart to Apple’s 3D Touch tech is expected to be included. According to leaked blueprints, the device will have a similar design to its predecessor.
3. HTC One M10
This device is expected to be launched ahead of Mobile World Congress in the February/March period. Sources have suggested that this device from the Taiwanese manufacturer will run with Google’s new update to the Android operating system, which has yet to be launched.
Rumours suggest that the device will have a camera capable of taking 4K video and fingerprint recognition capabilities.
4. Sony Xperia Z6
Sony’s smartphone business has been struggling for a while as the company increases its specialisation in its more lucrative and successful image sensor business. However, if Sony is going to stop making smartphones it will probably not be for a while.
The next generation of the Z series will apparently come in five different variants, according to a Weibo account. This will include models ranging from around 4 inches up to around 6 inches.
5. LG G5
Leaks are already appearing about LG‘s next device, which will reportedly have a 5.6-inch resolution display, and will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip.
It is also believed that it will have a 21 MP main camera, and an 8 MP front-facing ‘selfie’ camera. It is also rumoured that there will be an iris scanner and that the device will come out around February.
