If disk drives are to survive the growing challenge from solid state second storage – they still have a big price advantage, but there are limits to the amount that can be crammed onto a readable platter – the future is likely to be optical. And yet another industry body was created last week when 25 representatives from 18 optical data storage companies came together in San Jose to form the Optical Storage Trade Association to make the optical case. The association will concentrate on promoting all writable optical drives and media and related peripherals for computer data storage applications. Its charter is to stimulate the use of optical disk drives and media through extensive education and co-operative marketing efforts. The new organisation will be formally launched on June 24 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California. Founder members include Hewlett-Packard Co, Maxell Corp, Maxoptix Inc, Micro Design Inc, Olympus Optical Co, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co, Plasmon Data Systems Ltd, Sony Corp, TEAC Co and Verbatim Corp.
