Actuate Corp hopes to open up its open source Business Intelligence Reporting Tools to a broader developer community of application developers after striking up a partnership with PHP-specialist Zend Technologies Inc.
The South San Francisco-based software maker, which is the primary sponsor of the Eclipse-based BIRT project, said it is collaborating with Zend to allow PHP developers to easily embed enterprise-class reporting and charting capabilities into their web applications.
PHP, which is a recursive acronym for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor is a popular general-purpose scripting language that can be embedded in HTML to let developers create interactive content for web applications.
Actuate said the collaboration with Cupertino, California-based Zend represents the first BIRT eco-system outside of the Eclipse environment.
Additionally Zend’s latest 3.0 development platform will also integrate BIRT reporting capabilities via its Zend Java Bridge technology.
This is not the first move by Actuate to rally PHP developers around BIRT. In January this year the company launched version 2.0 of BIRT that includes a new reusable library, and report designer, and usability and performance enhancements that are intended to court Java and PHP developers.
