Minneapolis-based telecommunications equipment supplier ADC Telecommunications has formed a European subsidiary ADC Microcellular Systems Ltd that is to sell Groupe Speciale Mobile 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz microcellular base stations, to cellular operators to add into their networks to increase local capacity. The focus on microcellular systems -miniature cellular base stations- is to give ADC a slice of the growing $1bn a year market for these systems, which are used for cellular operators to improve their network coverage and capacity within corporate headquarters, large businesses, shopping malls and underground railways. ADC is also going to sell into European competitive telecoms operators as fixed cellular network equipment, networks that use mobile phones, but charge at a lower rate because they can only be used on a cheap network, in a restricted area, and then revert to normal cellular rates. ADC is OEMing the products from Redwood City, California-based Interwave Communications Inc, and ADC will be marketing them independently and alongside its range of GSM equipment.
