Advanced Micro Devices Inc has gone further than it went in its profits warning reported yesterday (CI No 1,027), and now says it doesn’t know which side of break even it will be for the quarter: it is laying 1,400 people, 8% of its workforce, at its Far East plants, and blames a slowdown in the personal computer market that has been growing at an annualised rate of 30% in the US, and that indicator is backed up by Intel Corp, which says that August demand for 80386 microprocessors was below expectations.
