Aladdin Knowledge Systems Ltd. has cut a new security key that will enable software publishers to reduce piracy, effectively by locking up their digital assets.
Best known for its eToken user authentication and password management system, Aladdin has also developed a product line in the field of digital rights management under its HASP and Privilege brands.
The new HASP HL system is a USB-based software copy protection system that has an onboard encryption engine which secures access and allows execution of software only when the key is connected to the computer.
During runtime HASP HL receives encrypted strings from the protected application and decrypts them in a way that cannot be imitated.
The system can be used to secure applications running on Windows 9x/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003, Mac OS 10.x, and Linux, the vendor said.
