The recent MVS settlement between IBM and Fujitsu, (CI No 1069) has led many to speculate that the Japanese company will now begin to look beyond its home territory, and go into competition with IBM worldwide on system software. One of several companies which might be tempted to rethink its operating system policy accordingly is Amdahl Corp, 46%-owned by Fujitsu, but run at arms’ length, which has to date shown unflinching support for IBM’s version of MVS on its own machines. Play-ing coy, and apparently unconvinced that Fujitsu would proceed in such a manner, an Amdahl spokesman predicted little change in short-term policy, but admitted that customers always benefit from more open competition. In the event of head-on competition beteen the giants, however, he conceded that offering support for both IBM and Fujitsu versions of MVS/ESA was a long-term possibility.
