Turns out that the American Civil Liberties Union has become just as loony as the National Council for Civil Liberties over here, and seems to have decided that people who want to conceal their identity when they use the phone should take priority over the poor saps who suffer the menace of threatening or obscene phone calls: it is bitterly opposing plans by Bell Atlantic’s New Jersey Bell to introduce a $6.50 a month service called Identa Call that flashes the number of the calling party on your phone, and says that if it is introduced, all those who have paid to have an un-listed number will have wasted their money and must get a refund.
