Apple Computer Inc has been demonstrating a virtual reality add-on for its QuickTime multimedia support environment – but the emphasis is more on the virtual than the reality. Due to go to developers at the end of the year, QuickTime VR enables a user to view a photographic or rendered representation of a scene in 360 degrees. Users can zoom in or out of a scene, navigate from one scene to another, and pick up and inspect objects. As the user changes their view of the scene, correct perspective is maintained, providing the effect of being there and looking around. All QuickTime 2.0-compliant applications will have the ability to play QuickTime VR files, and compression capabilities inherent with QuickTime means a 360-degree view fits into 1Mb.
