Apple Computer Inc and IBM Corp may be ready to make a foray into the information services market, Apple chairman John Sculley said at this week’s Seybold Digital World Conference in Beverly Hills, California. According to Reuter, Sculley called the creation of a US-wide information network key to the future direction of Apple, and that it might do so as a joint venture with IBM, via their existing Kaleida Inc alliance. Communications will be part of the architecture of Kaleida, Sculley said: it is now in full swing with all projects either on-schedule or ahead. IBM and Apple do not feel constrained to just be in products he said: Both companies are looking at going into information services. IBM general manager for multimedia Lucie Faeldstab told the conference that IBM has not only the technology to create a national information network but is pursuing partnerships to establish such a network. We see ourselves as being an information provider, she said. Apple will also use partners to help it improve its colour images and mobile telecommunications, president Michael Spindler said. Apple is keen to develop colour imagery and That will lead us to work with people interested in colour and a couple of companies are, he said, without naming them. Another big area is mobile computing. We work with our old partner Motorola Inc in that area, adding that unique products would shield Apple from price wars.
