Santa Ana-based California Software Products Inc has now announced details of its forthcoming Baby/AS emulation of IBM’s AS/400 RPG environment for personal computers running MS-DOS and OS/2 (CI No 1,186). There will be both single user and networked versions of the product, which will be introduced in three phases. The first phase, already in beta test, will be for System 36 users wanting to move to the AS/400, and will be released in the third quarter. It will cover the System/36 partition of the AS/400 and include all the AS/400 modifications to RPG II, which particularly affect the appearance, and will offer the screen and command keys, and the functionality of the Data File Utility, Program Development Manager and Source Entry Utility. The phase one offering will enable System/36 users to develop and migrate RPG II applications for the AS/400 on personal computers. Phase two will provide the same facilities for System/38 users, and add RPG 400, and phase three will provide full AS/400 functionality, including the relational database, likely the one in OS/2 Extended Edition. For those planning to travel the whole road with California Software, there’s a special introductory price of UKP4,075 single-user, UKP6,025 for the networked version, regardless of the eventual cost of phases two and three. For phase one only, prices will be UKP2,500 and UKP3,700. IBM is not likely to be too hostile to the effort, because it has several very large users of System/36 undecided on jumping to AS/400, Coca Cola Co among them: the capability to use personal computers rather than AS/400s in small branches – as Coke does with Baby/36 now – may well be enough to encourage them to make the move.
