NEC Corp is to increase its production of liquid crystal diode displays, pioneering the use of the screens in products other than protable personal computers, such as car navigation systems and handwritten input, and quadrupling monthly production of screens for use in engineering workstations – monthly production will be at the 4,000 level by the end of the year: production to date has been aimed at satisfying the requirements for NEC’s own workstations only; thin-film transistor screens will also be manufactured – NEC estimates that by 1995 thin film screens will account for $3,000m of the $7,800m LCD market; NEC says it is pitching for a 25% share of the thin-film transistor display market.
