International Digital Communications Inc, where Cable & Wireless Plc is an investor, says it has succeeded in sending a high-definition TV transmission over its north Pacific fibre cable. Using a Toshiba Corp digital coder-decoder and optical multiplex interface, two-to-four-channel HDTV images were transmitted at 140Mbps over a distance of 5,250 miles between Portland and Miura in the joint experiment with Pacific Telecom Cable. The two also succeeded in sending digital images at 45Mbps. It now plans an international TV transmission service in partnership with Toshiba.
