Cabletron Systems Inc has added WAN access to its SmartSwitch 2200 and 6000 workgroup and wiring closet switches. The new HSIM- W6, High Speed Interface Module, within the SmartSwitch 2200 adds WAN uplink with CSU/DSU functionality. Two WAN ports on the HSIM- W6 allow either full or fractional T1, E1, Drop and Insert, DDS, Sync or ISDN line interfaces. ISDN is supported as an automated, failover back-up line for the highest security data protection. The HSIM-W6 supports connections over Frame Relay, PPP and leased lines to support a large number of remote connections. An inverse multiplexing feature allows users to load-balance across the two WAN ports. It also supports IP and IPX routing as well as multiprotocol bridging through the WAN. The HSIM-W6 and its accompanying WAN Physical Interface Modules will be available next month. High Speed Interface Modules for FDDI and ATM uplinks are currently available. A SmartSwitch 2200 with the HSIM-W6 will be priced at around $10,000.
