Red Hat is releasing the latest version of its OpenStack Platform 9 product.
The open Infrastructure-as-a-Service platform is designed to help deploy, scale, and manage private cloud, public cloud, and Network Functions Virtualisation environments.
Based on the latest OpenStack community release, Mitaka, the company says that Platform 9 will help to provide a more secure, production-ready automated cloud platform that is integrated with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2, Ceph Storage 2, and CloudForms for hybrid cloud management and monitoring.
Included in the latest version will be automated updates and upgrades with Red Hat OpenStack Platform Director, which is designed to help reduce downtime for production environments when businesses move to the latest OpenStack advancements.
The company has also added selectable CPU pinning from OpenStack Compute (Nova). The Compute component will now offer an enhanced and faster instance of the live migration process, Red Hat said. This will help system admins to observe its progress and to pause and resume the migration task. A CPU pinning feature can also change the hypervisor behaviour with latency-sensitive workloads such as NFV in order to enable more fine-grained performance control.
As part of its collaboration with Google, Red Hat has added a tech preview of Google Cloud Storage backup driver in OpenStack Block Storage (Cinder). This means that disaster recovery policies in Platform 9 will now extend to the public cloud using integrated drivers created for Google Cloud Storage.
Radhesh Balakrishnan, general manager, OpenStack, Red Hat, said: “As customers continue to require more advanced workloads capabilities on top of their OpenStack deployments, we have updated Red Hat OpenStack Platform to go beyond just providing a secure, flexible base to build a private cloud.
“With this release of Red Hat OpenStack Platform 9, we continue to add capabilities to meet the production requirements of enterprises rolling our private clouds and service providers deploying NFV.”
A long held problem for OpenStack has been its complexity, so Red Hat has worked to help accelerate self-service for admins building OpenStack private clouds. The latest offering connects with CloudForms in order to help automate a cloud deployment environment.
