With MacWorld Expo taking place in San Francisco this week, a ripe crop of Apple Computer Inc product news is tumbling down, and MacWeek reports that the Cupertino company is ready with its Color Classic, a compact colour Mac costing less than $1,400 and expected to make its debut on February 10. The machine is said to be essentially an LC II with a built-in 10 Sony Corp Trinitron monitor. The CPU is a 16MHz 68030 with built-in support for 8-bit colour and a processor direct slot for expansion; memory will go from 4Mb to 10Mb, and it will come with an 80Mb or 160Mb disk. The paper also looks for a PowerBook 180 with a colour passive-matrix screen to appear as the PowerBook 165c. It looks for a 9 passive-matrix display, not as crisp or quick to respond as the active-matrix grey-scale screen on the 180, and the colour capability is expected to reduce somewhat the time the battery lasts between charges. It is expected to come with 4Mb and 80Mb or 160Mb disk options, with 33MHz 68030 CPU and maths co-processor. It is expected to cost about $3,600 with 80Mb. The company plans to follow up with the PowerBook 185C, an active-matrix colour notebook-sized Macintosh in the second quarter. It will put up 640 by 480 pixels on an 8.5 diagonal display. Overall, Apple says in its annual report that it is planning to introduce as many new personal computer products this year as it did in the past two years combined. New products on the stocks include its long-awaited high-end server as well as the Newton Personal Digital Assistant. The company also plans to expand its sales channels and will also begin selling some products by mail order, as well as adding network management and remote access products.
