Compaq Computer Corp Hungary and Szamalk Hardware Distribution Kft, a division of the recently privatised Hungarian systems integration company, have signed a contract to establish a Compaq training centre in Budapest. The centre, which will cost the equivalent of $150,000 to set up, will be equipped with four networks, 25 workstations and a CAD/CAM studio, and will be used to train computer dealers and corporate clients, offering courses on Novell Inc, Microsoft Corp, Santa Cruz Operation Inc Unix and Lotus Development Corp software on Compaq hardware. Though it is not clear how the project is being funded, Szamalk said that Compaq will have no financial interest in the training services it will provide, and the contract stipulates that the training centre will have to be spun off from Szamalk and become an independent entity by April 1995. Szamalk has already diversified from computer reselling activities into providing Master of Business Administration courses and various other value-added services, as its monopoly in the systems integration market ends. However Szamalk remains the major distributor of Microsoft products in the country.
