Comsat Corp, Washington plans to announce today that it is to test a new experimental service that would provide those at sea with multiple telephone lines, facsimile capabilities, video-conferencing and other value-added telecommunications applications, Dow Jones & Co reported. Comsat will provide the wideband maritime service as a member of the Intelsat global satellite system, and the new test involves a six-month demonstration on board the US Navy’s aircraft carrier USS George Washington, in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The Wideband Mobile Service would enable passengers to call from payphones aboard ship at 50 cents a minute, against $6.25 a minute on the Inmarsat system.
